Sudanese Army Claims Capture of Key Eastern City From Rebels

The Sudanese army has announced its capture of a decisive city in the eastern region, marking one of its significant victories in the nearly two-year-long conflict with rebel forces.

Social media footage showed citizens celebrating as army soldiers entered the city of Wad Madani.

Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, leader of the paramilitary organization Rapid Support Forces (RSF), acknowledged the loss in an audio message. His response was emotional and disjointed, blaming the defeat on the army’s air dominance and the use of Iranian-made drones. Nevertheless, he vowed to continue the fight until they achieve victory, even if it takes another two decades.

Wad Madani, the capital of Al Jazira state, lies 87 miles (140 km) south of the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. The city is strategically important, serving as a vital intersection for several states connected by important supply routes and being the nearest major town to Khartoum.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating war between the RSF and the Sudanese army. The RSF retains control over much of the Darfur region and significant parts of the south, while the regular army controls the north, east, and portions of Khartoum.

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, and the United Nations has called it one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with about nine million people forced to flee their homes. The country is also facing a severe famine, with about 24.6 million people, or nearly half of the population, in urgent need of food assistance.

Earlier this month, the United States imposed sanctions on the RSF leader, accusing the group of committing genocide. Officials stated that the sanctions were in response to his involvement in “systematic” atrocities against the Sudanese people during the 20-month conflict.
