An explosion at a natural gas refilling facility in Yemen’s Al-Bayda province, which is under the control of Houthi rebels, has resulted in the deaths of twelve people and injuries to over 100 others, according to two officials who spoke to AFP on Sunday.

The blast occurred on Saturday at a gas storage facility in the Al-Zaher area. Aref al-Ghamri, the province’s communications chief, confirmed that the fatalities were from Al-Bayda, and more than 100 people were injured.

Another local official stated that the explosion happened while customers were at the refilling station, and its proximity to a market contributed to the high death toll.

Videos circulated on social media, which AFP could not independently verify, showed flames consuming numerous vehicles near the station.

This explosion is not the first of its kind in Yemen. The cause of the blast, which took place in a region that serves as a frontline between the Iran-backed Houthi rebels and government forces, remains unknown.
