Donald Trump is set to be sworn in for a historic second term as U.S. president on Monday, promising to usher in a new “golden age” for America as the world braces for the return of his unpredictable leadership.
Due to freezing weather, the inauguration ceremony has been moved indoors, but the first hours of what is described as the most remarkable comeback in U.S. political history will be filled with activity.
The Republican president-elect pledged to swiftly enact a series of executive orders aimed at reversing the policies of outgoing President Joe Biden, including launching immediate deportations of undocumented immigrants. While Trump painted a bleak picture of “American carnage” during his first inauguration in 2017, this time he promises a “brand new day” for the country.
“I will act with historic speed and strength to fix every single crisis facing our country,” Trump declared at an inauguration-eve rally, where he even danced with the Village People band.

However, he also revisited some of the darker themes that fueled his election victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in November. Trump vowed to “stop the invasion of our borders” and undo what he called “woke” policies.
At dawn on Monday, the National Mall, where the inauguration was originally planned, was mostly deserted, with the exception of the Fairchild family, who traveled from Michigan to honor Trump. “Ecstatic,” said grandmother Barb when asked how they felt, adding that she believed the indoor ceremony was to “protect our president.”
In his final hours in office, Biden issued several controversial pardons, including for former COVID-19 advisor Anthony Fauci and retired General Mark Milley, to protect them from potential “politically motivated prosecutions” under Trump’s leadership.
Biden also pardoned members, staff, and witnesses related to the U.S. House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot instigated by Trump supporters.
Trump will break another record as the oldest president to be sworn in, becoming only the second U.S. president in history to return to power after being voted out, following Grover Cleveland’s return in 1893.
Before the ceremony, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Trump and his wife Melania at the White House for a “tea and coffee” meeting, marking a stark contrast to the 2021 inauguration, when Trump who had incited the violent Capitol attack refused to attend Biden’s swearing-in.
Due to the intense cold, the swearing-in will take place indoors in the Capitol’s Rotunda, similar to President Ronald Reagan’s inauguration in 1985, rather than on the National Mall in front of a large crowd. “As soon as President Trump places his hand on the Bible and swears the Oath to the United States Constitution, the Golden Age of America will begin,” said spokesperson Karoline Leavitt on social media.
Despite the celebratory tone, many remain concerned about Trump’s promises of retribution against his adversaries. His return to the Oval Office marks the culmination of a remarkable journey, including surviving two assassination attempts and a criminal conviction to secure his second term. Once a political outsider, Trump now commands Washington’s center stage.
The inauguration will be attended by some of the world’s wealthiest individuals, including tech magnates Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, who are expected to play key roles in the new administration. Musk, who is leading a cost-cutting initiative for the White House, vowed at a Sunday rally to make America strong “for centuries.”

Trump has pledged to sign around 100 executive orders within hours of taking office, including declaring a national emergency on the southern U.S. border with Mexico and reversing Biden’s policies on diversity and oil drilling. Trump also indicated he would pardon the individuals involved in the January 6 riot, a move his supporters will likely welcome.
For the rest of the world, Trump’s return to the presidency signals more unpredictability. From threatening sweeping tariffs to making territorial claims on Greenland and Panama and questioning U.S. aid to Ukraine, Trump is expected to challenge the global order once more.
His victory has also emboldened right-wing leaders worldwide, with Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expected to attend the inauguration, despite foreign leaders typically not being invited.
