As internet slowdowns continue to affect users across Pakistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is exploring the possibility of reaching out to tech magnate Elon Musk to address the ongoing issue.
Shafqat Ayaz, the Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, disclosed that the government is considering contacting various stakeholders, including Musk, to resolve the internet speed crisis, which has severely impacted the IT sector in the region. He mentioned that while the internet problem in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa persists, the exact causes remain unclear.
Pakistan has been facing a prolonged internet speed problem, with the government attributing it to faults in submarine cables, although some reports suggest that authorities might be experimenting with a “firewall.”
The situation follows comments from Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, who recently confirmed that he is awaiting approval from the Pakistani government to launch his satellite internet service, Starlink, in the country. Musk made the statement on his official X account during a conversation with Pakistani social media activist Sanam Jamali, who urged him to expedite the launch, emphasizing the potential benefits Starlink could offer in terms of connectivity, education, and opportunities.
In response to the ongoing internet disruptions, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Pakistan’s Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, revealed last month that the government is in talks with Starlink to introduce its services in Pakistan.
