Russia Signals Dialogue Following Trump’s Call

The Kremlin responded on Thursday to comments made by the US President Donald Trump regarding the conflict in Ukraine, stating that it is “ready for mutually respectful dialogue” with him.  Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, when questioned about Trump’s statements, indicated that they contained “no particularly new elements.”  Peskov noted that Trump’s previous presidency demonstrated his apparent preference for sanctions, adding that Russia is “closely” monitoring his pronouncements.

Trump had issued a warning on Wednesday, threatening further sanctions against Moscow unless President Putin agrees to end hostilities.  On Truth Social, he stated, “If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”

However, Trump also claimed that the US doesn’t intend to “hurt Russia” and that he has “always had a very good relationship with President Putin.”  He continued,  “All of that being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR. Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE,”

The Republican figure urged a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, declaring, “It’s time to ‘MAKE A DEAL.’”  He further asserted that the war would never have occurred had he remained president.

Russia is already subject to extensive US sanctions imposed following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, significantly curtailing trade.  Earlier this month, the Biden administration, Trump’s successor, implemented additional sanctions targeting Moscow’s energy sector.  The Kremlin has consistently dismissed the wide-ranging Western sanctions levied since the commencement of the Ukraine invasion in February 2022.
