Smog Causes Travel Chaos In Delhi

Dense fog and poor air quality have led to major disruptions in travel across India’s capital, Delhi. In the early hours of Friday, visibility in different regions was reported to be near zero, causing delays to flights, trains, and road transport.

Over 150 flights were delayed, and numerous trains are running behind schedule due to the adverse weather conditions, according to reports.

This recurring issue in northern India during winter months, particularly between December and January, occurs as low temperatures trap pollutants close to the ground, reducing visibility and making travel difficult while also deteriorating air quality.

The air quality index in Delhi exceeded 400 in some areas, as per the Safar website, which is more than 25 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) safe limit.

In response, local authorities have reintroduced pollution control measures, including bans on construction and demolition activities, and the shift of schools to online classes.

Footage from Delhi and nearby regions showed roads, farms, and buildings covered by a thick fog. Delhi airport has issued an advisory for passengers about potential disruptions due to low visibility.

“While landings and take-offs continue at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected,” the advisory stated. CAT III is a system that allows planes to land in low visibility conditions.

According to the flight tracking website flightradar24, departures from Delhi airport were delayed by over 30 minutes, and arrivals were delayed by almost 20 minutes. Several passengers took to social media, complaining of confusion at the airport.

“No display of boarding gate and it seems no one knows the exact status,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Additionally, 26 trains to Delhi are delayed due to the fog, as reported by Indian Railways.

India’s weather department has forecast light showers over the weekend, which are expected to help improve visibility.
