New Zealand opening batter Martin Guptill has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a distinguished career that spanned over a decade. Guptill, who scored more than 13,000 runs across all formats, made the announcement in a statement to New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

“As a young kid, it was always my dream to play for New Zealand, and I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have played 367 games for my country,” said Guptill, who is New Zealand‘s fifth-highest run scorer in international cricket history.

“I will forever cherish the memories made wearing the silver fern alongside a great group of guys. I want to say a huge thanks to all my teammates and coaching staff over the years, particularly Mark O’Donnell, who has coached me since the Under-19 level and been a source of ongoing support and wisdom throughout my career.”

Guptill’s retirement comes with an impressive record, having accumulated 13,463 runs across formats, trailing only the likes of Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum, Stephen Fleming, and Ross Taylor in New Zealand’s all-time run-scorer list.

He played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s journey to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup final, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 547 runs. Notably, Guptill also smashed a historic 237 off 163 deliveries against the West Indies during the same World Cup, a record for the highest individual score in a World Cup match, and the second-highest in ODI history.

Despite his retirement from international cricket, Guptill plans to continue playing in franchise cricket and is among the high-profile foreign players who have signed up for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 players draft, set to take place in Lahore on January 13.

Guptill expressed his gratitude to cricket fans in New Zealand and across the globe for their support over the years, adding, “I’d like to thank all the cricket fans, here in NZ and around the world, for all their support throughout the years.”
