Donald Trump has announced that a meeting is being planned between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US president-elect did not specify a timeframe for when this meeting might occur.
“He wants to meet and we are setting it up,” Trump stated during remarks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
In response, the Kremlin expressed its willingness for the talks but noted that no specifics had yet been finalized.
Trump has pledged to negotiate a resolution to the war in Ukraine shortly after taking office on 20 January and has voiced doubts about the US providing military and financial assistance to Kyiv.
“President Putin wants to meet,” he reiterated on Thursday.
“He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”
On Friday, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry said Kyiv anticipated high-level discussions with the Trump administration following the inauguration.
These discussions would include a prospective meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The president-elect has selected Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant-general in the US military, to serve as special envoy to Ukraine and Russia during his second administration.

In a research report published by the US-based America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank, in April of the previous year, Kellogg outlined his vision for how the US might help bring an end to the war.
He recommended that Ukraine should receive additional US aid only if it agreed to participate in peace negotiations with Moscow.
The report also suggested that, if Moscow declined to engage, the US should continue its support for Ukraine.
After Trump’s election triumph in November, Zelensky expressed optimism that the war would “end sooner” with Trump in power than it would otherwise.
