Trump faces a very different Kim Jong Un this time

The cameras struggled to capture a steady shot as Donald Trump took his first historic steps into uncharted territory alongside Kim Jong Un. In 2019, the then-45th president of the United States placed a hand on the North Korean leader’s arm. On cue, Kim led him across the threshold dividing North Korea and South Korea—two nations technically still at war.

Behind them, inside the heavily secured Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), chaos erupted as video crews scrambled for a clear view. North Korean bodyguards appeared caught off guard by the swarm of U.S. media.

At one point, a reporter called for assistance, prompting the White House press secretary to intervene and pull them from behind a line of security to the Trump-Kim photo opportunity.

This meeting had been arranged in haste—and it showed.

“I never expected to meet you at this place,” Kim remarked to Trump.

The meeting came about after the U.S. president proposed the idea on Twitter, as it was then known, just 30 hours earlier. He suggested meeting Chairman Kim at the DMZ “just to shake his hand and say Hello!”

The spontaneous invitation resulted in a third and final extraordinary televised moment between a showman president and a formerly reclusive dictator. Now, it seems there might be more. Trump revealed during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity last Thursday that he plans to “reach out” to Kim once again.

“I got along with him,” Trump said. “He is not a religious zealot. He happens to be a smart guy.”

The previous meetings between the two nations during Trump’s administration did not produce the much-anticipated agreement to persuade North Korea to abandon its prized nuclear weapons.

In the years since, Kim has made significant progress with his missile program and claims to have successfully tested a hypersonic missile, despite facing strict international sanctions.

This marks a stark contrast from the time when Trump proudly declared that the two leaders “fell in love.”

The key question now is whether their relationship can be revived—or if the situation has fundamentally changed.

Washington will likely encounter a different Kim this time around. Over the past four years, his alliances and fortunes have shifted, and his relationship with another world leader has seemingly strengthened. Could these changes have permanently altered his dynamic with Trump?
