Elon Musk Criticizes TikTok Ban Policy and Calls for Change in US-China Social Media Access
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed support for President-elect Donald Trump’s decision not to ban the Chinese social media app TikTok in the United States, while questioning the restrictions on X (formerly Twitter) in China.
Musk, a long-time opponent of the TikTok ban, took to Twitter to share his views, stating, “I have been against a TikTok ban for a long time, because it goes against freedom of speech.” However, he raised concerns over the current situation, where TikTok is allowed to operate in the US, but X is banned in China. Musk added, “Something needs to change.”
Reports indicate that Trump agreed to approve TikTok’s continued operation in the US under the condition that the US would own 50% of the Chinese app, claiming it would protect American jobs and safeguard national interests.
Musk had previously voiced his opposition to the TikTok ban in 2024, even though such a ban could benefit X. He emphasized that banning TikTok would be contradictory to the principles of freedom of speech and expression, which he argued are central to America’s values.
